Categorization of Plant and Insect Species via Shape Analysis

چکیده
This chapter presents a graph-based approach to automatically categorize plant and insect species. In this approach, the plant leaf and insect objects are segmented from the background semi-automatically. For each object, the contour is then extracted, so that the contour points are used to form the vertices of a graph. We propose a vectorization method to recover clique histogram vectors from the graphs for classification. The clique histogram represents the distribution of one vertex with respect to its adjacent vertices. This treatment permits the use of a codebook approach to represent the graph in terms of a set of codewords that can be used for purposes of support vector machine classification. The experimental results show that the method is not only effective but also robust, and comparable with other methods in the literature for species recognition.

Isolation and morphological study of ecologically-important insect “Hermetia illucens” collected from Roorkee compost plant
Certain species of Hermetia illucens, also known as the Black Soldier Fly(BSF), were found in a compost plant in Roorkee located in Northern India. Its larvae arevoracious eaters of organic waste, hence can play an ecologically-important role in solidwaste management. Morphological analysis of various stages of BSF life cycle by SEMshowed that its body along with its wings is densely covered wi...
متن کاملInsect Species Recognition using Sparse Representation
Insect species recognition is a typical application of image categorization and object recognition. Unlike generic image categorization datasets (such as the Caltech 101 dataset) that have large variations between categories, the difference of appearance between insect species is so small that only some entomologist experts can distinguish them. Therefore, the state-of-the-art image categorizat...

During last two decades studies on endozoochorous seed dispersal indicated that a large numbers of plant seeds are potentially dispersed and suceefully germinated via animal dung. However, very little is known about the relative importance of endozoochory in germination success of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content, seed deposition p...
